The celebration is part of the Mayor’s Healthy Planet, Healthy You initiative, a year-round program that promotes ways to help address wellness while fighting childhood obesity, an issue close to the heart of the mayor, the father of two youngsters.
“Childhood obesity has a high cost to our children in long-term health and self-esteem,” according to Pougnet. “It’s important to show families small, easy steps they can take that can make a big difference in healthy living.”
The fall Sustainability Celebration will coincide with the Palm Springs Organic Farmers’ market and will feature a refrigerated “grocery valet” so Farmers’ Market shoppers can check their groceries and stay to enjoy exhibitors on all things organic as well as nutritional demonstrations.
Speakers will include Mayor Pougnet, Dr. Stephen Gundry, author of Dr. Gundry’s Diet Revolution, Scott Cole, creator of the popular GET FIT AMERICA FOR KIDS and Michelle Globis, Ambassador for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. In addition, there will be group exercise activities and organic food trucks.
The fall Sustainability Celebration will also encourage residents to begin looking at “shedding” pounds in other areas of their lives, too. According to one estimate, the average Coachella Valley resident generates approximately nine tons of carbon each year. The Celebration will feature an alternative-fuel vehicle showcase and will have educational tips that include transportation, solar and energy alternatives and other ways residents can “shed” some of their carbon weight.
The Healthy Planet, Healthy You initiative is a City of Palm Springs program created to raise awareness on the connection between sustainability and wellness in order to reduce childhood obesity, a problem of epidemic proportions across the United States.
Starting Nov. 1, participants can sign up for 2nd annual Mayor’s Healthy Planet, Healthy You 1K, 5K, 7 mile race to fight childhood obesity, slated for April of 2013. For more information, visit
